Licorice Love

licorice

A score of uses for licorice! Score!

  • Aside from using a drop of licorice to stabilize a lot of flavors in baked treats you can just add the licorice by itself to a cookie or brownie batter (in fact lots of german and jewish bakery items are flavored with anise, which is very similar so you know there are already fans). These types of cookies are terrific with breakfast and they help settle your stomach.
  • The flavor goes great with coffee; try a drop of licorice extract in homemade whipped cream and use on top of lattes, mochas and hot chocolates.
  • Add a drop to Carrot cake, spice flavored cakes or cupcakes.
  • Stir into caramel for pouring over ice cream.
  • Take that ice cream maker out of its box and make some black licorice ice cream with the black food coloring and go the whole nine yards- great for fall.
  • Like cinnamon? A drop added to cinnamon makes a much more interesting flavor.
  • Stir it into the chocolate you’re using to dip strawberries or bananas, or candied orange peel.
  • Stir a drop or two into some cake icing. Its very subtle and makes that cake so much less plain.
  • Stir it into a chocolate pudding mix from a box.  Makes it way tastier.
  • Stir into the caramel for dipping candy apples. Maybe add some black food coloring and go all creepy and stuff.   Ooo.. scary food.
  • And for non desserts: a drop added to barbeque sauce is just ridiculous over pulled pork or any chinese spiced meat, since there’s a lot of anise and chinese five spice in those already so you’re already comfortable with the flavor being there.
  • Add to the marinade for a nice roast pork.
  • Make your own licorice vines and dip them in chocolate 😉
  • Mix into orange marmalade to schmear on toast- back to the breakfast theme.
